Hair Growth
How does hair grow?
Hair forms in a pouch-like structure below the skin called a hair
follicle. Hair is actually the hair shaft, which is the keratinized,
hardened tissue that grows from this follicle.
Humans have more hair follicles per square inch of skin than most
higher primates, including chimpanzees and gorillas. Because most
of this hair is fine and pale (called vellus hair), it usually
isn't visible to the naked eye. Consider this: the forehead has
more hair follicles than any other part of the body. The thicker,
fully pigmented hair most people consider "real hair" is called
terminal hair. This hair is found on scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs,
underarms, and genital areas. This is the hair the Light Sheer

Everyone's hair grows differently, depending on age, weight,
metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors.
But all hair goes through three distinct growth phases:
1. Active growth phase (called the anagen phase), which lasts up
to several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our
body hair is in this phase. During anagen, the hair has an
abundance of melanin.
2. Regressive phase (catagen phase), which lasts about two weeks,
during which the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 3 -
4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.
3. Resting phase (telogen phase), which lasts 5 - 6 weeks, at the
end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form.
Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one
time.
Increase hair growth
Lack of proper nutrition puts one's hair at risk of becoming dry,
brittle, weak, and even falling out. A well-balanced diet is the
best way to keep your hair healthy and strong. Be sure to get
proper protein as well as hair-supportive vitamins and minerals
(B complex, C, E, and zinc). A well-balanced diet consists of a
lot of fruits and vegetables, and proteins and carbohydrates from
nuts, grains and legumes. Consume foods high in biotin, which is
essential for healthy hair. Good food sources of biotin include
brewer's yeast, brown rice, green peas, lentils, oats, soybeans,
and sunflower seeds. Oils from fish (salmon), flaxseed, grapeseed,
primrose, soybean, sesame, and unsaturated nuts and vegetable oils
are the only sources of hair enriching, essential fatty acids
(Omega 3 and 6). They should be consumed in pure liquid or
supplement form and not heated, cooked, or processed since heat
destroys the essential fatty acids.
Some other hair growing tips
1. Eliminate or cut back on smoking, caffeine and carbonated sodas
which weaken the body and block maximum hair growing potential.
2. Eat a healthy diet. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat.
3. Treat your hair like a piece of fine old lace. Treat it
carefully avoiding any unnecessary brushing, combing or handling.
4. Avoid use of hot water, hot blow dryers or other hair care tools
that may stress the hair.
5. Have a weekly scalp massage to provide stimulation to the hair
follicles.
6. Do a series of ongoing hot oil treatments to protect the
hair's shaft.
7. Have regular trims to eliminate split ends and allow the hair
to look and feel healthier.
8. Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to grow hair.
